It's been almost a year since tornadoes ripped through eastern carolina, killing 12 people in Bertie County and injuring many- including in Greene County where there is now a new alert system for severe weather, and it's free to everyone who lives there.
It's called the Delta Alert System, and is an expansion of Greene County's reverse 911 system which calls people based on urgent situations such as a prison break. Greene County Manager Don Davenport says the system will now call people with severe weather alerts, such as a tornado warning, but says those interested in getting phone calls or text messages will have to sign up on the county's web site.
You can also sign up for severe weather alerts on witn.com.
