Thanks to a mild winter and a warm March, fruits and vegetables are arriving ahead of schedule in the east.
Both strawberries and blueberries, along with other crops, are coming in more than two weeks early this year.
Growers at Southside Farms in Chocowinity are adapting to the change. But owner Shawn Harding says keeping their strawberries in good shape wasn't easy. "The challenge was that early in April having frosts we were having to cover the strawberries and then uncover them so we could pick at the same time, which we never had to do before. So that was pretty challenging. But we got through it pretty good."
Harding says blueberries will be ready to go in two weeks. Normally Harding doesn't pick them for another month.
Even with their early arrival, he hopes blueberry season will last between 4 and 6 weeks.
