Friday marked the last day of a busy Atlantic hurricane season with 19 named storms well above the average 12 named storms a season. Ten became hurricanes.
According to the National Weather Service, this is the 7th consecutive year no major hurricanes, a category 3, 4, or 5, have hit the U.S. However, as we saw with Sandy, its' wrong to think only major hurricanes can ruin lives and destroy the places we call home. One interesting aspect of this season was its early start.
"As we saw earlier this year Alberto and Beryl that occurred in May, it is unusual, but it does occur sometimes out of the June 1st to November 30th dates," said NWS meteorologist David Glenn.
If the season can start early, it can end late. While November 30th is the official end of hurricane season, we could still have another one this year.
NOAA will release its prediction for next hurricane season in May.
