Food Lion, Two Other National Stores To Stop Selling Meat With "Pink Slime"

Three national supermarket chains, including one with stores across Eastern Carolina, have decided to stop selling ground beef that contains the filler known as "pink slime".

Federal regulators say the filler meets food safety standards, but critics say the product could be unsafe.

Food Lion says it plans to stop carrying fresh ground beef with either of two similar fillers, which it says are both made with beef trimmings left over from other cuts.

Pink slime, which has been used for years, is made from fatty bits of leftover meat that are heated, spun to remove the fat, compressed into blocks and exposed to ammonia to kill bacteria. Producers often mix the filler into fattier meat to produce an overall leaner product and reduce their costs.

The other national stores that will stop selling it are Supervalue and Safeway.

I know there is a butcher shop in Snow Hill and also one on HWY 70 and there is the Garner family in Greene county that sells their own meat..These grocery stores only change their underhanded ways when they get caught. Be careful what you eat...

Pink slime sounds so gross. I donot even want fast food anymore due to this gross pink slime. Better for me in the long run. And now maybe Foodlion, well I will go to the pig and buy my meat.

To poor people are funny. You are what's wrong in this world. Just because people don't have money it doesn't mean they don't have ALOT more class than you do. You would probably turn your nose up at Our Lord because "He looked poor." Shame on you for your very Unchristian attitude. Look out, one day you may be "a poor person."

You complain and complain about what things cost and then freak out when you realize "you get what you pay for." My child attends private school, I shop only at whole foods. My health is worth more then saving a dollar or two per pound. No wonder cancer is everywhere.

It won't be long before you fall off the pedestal you have put yourself on. It will hurt when you fall. Any second you can lose everything important to you. No one is immune to disaster no matter how you live. I had things like you but it all changed in the blink of an eye. I lost my daughter, my son, my job and my health. All in 2 years time. Now I'm just thankful to be alive, have God in my life and have what little bit I have because that little bit is all I need. Sometimes less is more!!!

for poor people like us, saving a dollar or two per pound is actually kind of a big deal. im hoping your post is a troll post to rile people up, which is actually immature and doesnt help anyone. if you are poor, grow a garden this summer. it's easier than you think. and you get fresh veggies and fruits for months--for free! if you grow more than you need, carry some to your neighbor. because thats what its all about!

If you have ever had vienna sausage, frozen dinner with beef patty, or any other processed beef, then you have had pink slime. I don't have a problem with it...I use chuck and grind my own beef.

The butcher at my Foodlion lied to me yesterday when I asked him if the ground beef had this in it. He claimed he had never heard of it. If one person lies to you, any and all will lie to you. Trust is a very fragil thing.

This butcher at Food Lion doesn't know what's in it. Most, if not all, of his product is shipped in already packaged.
