TROOPERS: DWI Suspect Jumps From Moving Vehicle

A Cherry Point Marine who was charged with DWI is accused of jumping from a moving vehicle on his way back to the air station.

Sergeant Williams of the Highway Patrol in Carteret County says Kenneth Pitts, a lance corporal from Cherry Point, was arrested for driving while intoxicated on Monday night.

Troopers say after Pitts was charged by the Highway Patrol, his non-commissioned officer (NCO) picked him up to take him back to the air station. Troopers say on the way back to Cherry Point, Pitts jumped from his superior officer's truck as it was driving on Highway 70, just west of the Newport city limits.

Troopers said the Marine has been charged with DWI, but nothing else. The Marine was not seriously injured, and traffic was not affected.

Cherry Point officials said the Lance Corporal is a marksmanship coach on base.
