Local Chick-fil-A Restaurants Busy As Supporters Take Part In Appreciation Day

Supporters of Chick-fil-A are taking part in a national appreciation day, as the company continues to come under fire for a company official's comments regarding gay marriage.

Several local Chick-fil-A stores are crowded today.

While some folks were there just to grab a bite, others told us they were there specifically to support the company. One woman we talked with had traveled to Greenville from Jamesville in Martin County, while another woman had driven from Washington.

We do know at least one local community group rallied people to support the company's store in New Bern.

The Craven-Pamlico Christian Coalition sent out an e-mail message, stating in part "Please support Chick-fil-A's Freedom of Speech August 1st, all day! Support them by stopping by for breakfast, lunch, dinner or all three! Be patient if they're busy."

They are busy. In fact, traffic is tied up near the New Bern location as people go to the restaurant.

In Jacksonville, police were called out to direct traffic at the Chick-fil-A at 1405 Western Boulevard because of congestion.

In Greenville, at the Evans Street location, lines were literally out the door. The drive thru line circled the entire parking lot and even blocked traffic at times in the shopping center parking lot.

Chick-fil-A came under fire last month when president Dan Cathy made a comment supporting traditional marriage.

The idea of a national "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" came from former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. He's a Baptist preacher.

It's also been reported that opponents of Chick-fil-A are planning a protest day Friday, encouraging people of the same sex to kiss at the chicken chain's restaurants.
