A health clinic in Bethel that many people say is vital to the community, will close in three weeks and move 15 miles away to Greenville.
East Carolina University officials decided to move the clinic because they say it was costing too much money to run it claiming it's lost nearly $500,000 over the past 3 years. Town officials say ECU plans to sell the building to them for a dollar, but that could take six months to go through. Until then ECU hopes to lease the building to the town, but it could still take a couple months for the transition, forcing some patients to travel.
"A lot of people in Bethel don't have transportation. You can get someone to bring you from the clinic to Greenville, but it's hard to get someone to carry you to Greenville, wait to see the doctor, then bring you back home." said Bethel clinic patent Marvin Butler.
If the town can lease or buy the building, they plan to find another doctor to come in. The clinic will close at the end of August
