Cool Town Contest Ends In Tie

It was so close that a tie has been declared in a national contest to decide the coolest small town in America. Technically, Beaufort won the Budget Travel Magazine contest.

The Carteret County town had been locked in a fierce online battle with Hammondsport, New York in online voting for the top spot. So much that voting last night crashed the magazine's web site and they declared it a tie. The magazine says since voters in several parts of the country were locked out due to the crash, Budget travel editors decided it was impossible to determine who would have won without the crash.

In the end, 360,000 votes were cast with Beaufort 36.2% and Hammondsport with 36%, the closest ever in the magazine's contest.

Beaufort now has bragging rights as the country's coolest small town. The town says while it's a little disappointed the contest ended in a tie and an all out winner wasn't declared, a tie and shutting down their web site is pretty awesome.

The contest is being held by Budget Travel Magazine. Voting ended at midnight.

At ten minutes to midnight, Beaufort was just .10% behind Hammondsport, New York. The website now says the voting is closed, and they'll announce the winner sometime Wednesday morning.

The magazine says readers nominated nearly 650 small towns this year, and their editors narrowed the choices down to ten.

What I don't understand is that at around 2:00 when I checked the web site it showef Beaufort to be the winner. I started bragging about it to everyone and then someone pointed out to me that they decided to have them tie. Boy I felt pretty stupid.

If the magazines server didn't bog down last evening and prevent people from voting, Beaufort may well have won outright. I'd much rather take Beaufort over Hammondsport.

Well, what do you know about that! Our little Beaufort is 'coolest small city in America'. Yay for Beaufort. Wonder if they will be on T.V. to receive the award? Hey, they'll get a sign, maybe?

The story is right. It's probably a good idea to double check before jumping to conclusions. (When you googled it, it probably pulled up 2011 winners. It did for me) Here is a link to the magazines website.

Does Beaufort have the infestation of thugs and crime like Greenville, Kinston, Goldsboro and Rocky Mount have? If not, I may think of moving there and getting out of this hole.

I voted for Hammondsport! I live in Greenville now, but I was born in Bath and then moved to Prattsburg in 2nd grade. Still have a ton of family in the area. I have spent a lot of time in Hammondsport and love, love, love that place!
