As the Pitt County Sheriff's Office continues to arrest what it has identified as deadbeat dads, one suspect arrested says he can't pay.
Deputies say Brent Thomas owes more than $32,000 in back child support from 1989. Thomas tells WITN he was in jail in Ohio when the mother of his now-grown twins raised their kids. He got out of jail in 1996 and lived in another state.
Thomas says his disability has kept him from paying the money he owes. He says he suffered a stroke in 2006. Tuesday he was at the Social Services department trying to figure out how to stay out of jail. Thomas says, "I hope to resolve the problem altogether so I don't have to keep going to jail for the same thing."
There is about a million dollars in outstanding child support payments in Pitt County. Since the start of the program, social services has collected $25,000. The initiative ends father's day weekend.
