Families who survive disasters turn to the American Red Cross for help. Tuesday it's asking for the public's help.
The Red Cross of Pitt County, held its Heroes for the American Red Cross kickoff in Greenville Tuesday. Families who received assistance from the Red Cross, spoke about how volunteers came to their aid. The Simmons family from Stokes lost everything in a house fire last year. They say the Red Cross made sure they got back on their feet.
Summer Woodard, the executive director in Pitt County says it takes about $1200 to help a family of 4 affected by a fire.
"We are mandated by the federal government to respond to every disaster, but they don't fund that response. So the funding comes from the public- events like this and our heroes campaign,"
said Woodard
The American Red Cross eastern chapter took care of 320 individuals last year affected by fires.
