Student Suspended For Covering Mouth With Duct Tape

A student in the east is kicked out of school for refusing to take duct tape off his mouth. He says he was expressing his religious freedom, but school officials say he was causing a disruption.

Patrick Richmond was suspended from Trexler Middle School in Onlsow County for not taking off duct tape which read "silence for Christ."

Patrick's father Shawn says his son took a vow of silence for the day and it's his son religious right to express himself. School officials say the duct tape was causing a disruption and gave him the option of taking it off or be sent home.

Assistant Onslow County Superintendent Barry Collins says,"The position of the board is we don't infringe on anyone's right to freedom of expression." Collins says he has no problem with students expressing themselves outside of class like lunch or recess.

Three other students, including Patrick's sister, were all asked at the beginning of class to remove the tape which they did.

The teacher could have sent him to iss But There is no more iss at our school because of our principal. It is now called chillout period. She treats us like we're 4. I dont see any problem with what he did. Hellooo! freedom of speech or in his case freedom of silence. This was not disruptive in any way,he was silent. What is so wrong with that.Good job patrick!

I am a Christian and as a Christian I apologize for the hypocrisy in so many professing Christians today. Many speak with their mouths but don't walk the walk. Walking the walk means not preaching 'at' others, but allowing the heart to be truly changed. I have not one problem when someone who isn't a Christian speaks up about the hypocrisy in professing Christians. The simple fact is many of their accusations do hold water and should be listened to. If Christians today were to really live as Christ lived, people would be changed and no one would be able to say a bad word as it wouldn't hold water... If the student in question were really wanting to follow God then he'd also have taken note of 'honor your leaders' and 'render unto caesar what is caesar's.' i.e. in other words, God has appointed leaders whether we like it or not and authority should be respected. If the teachers are not asking you to commit a sin (i.e. something immoral), then you are called to submit to them...

To those who think we did not do the right thing, try being a teacher at Trexler. We are here to educate children, not deal with things of this nature. This was going to be disruptive to our instructional time and we put the "Brakes" on it quickley. From what I gather, when the boy walked in he was already being laughed at, pointed at and drawing a crowd to what he was doing. We got a job to do and anyone or anything that causes a disruption or "Attention" as I see it, has to be addressed so we can get on with things. So Much to teach, so little time. Then at the end of the year the children are tested. If they don't do well guess who takes the blame? WE DO! If you wanna practice your religion, by all means feel free but do it on your watch not mine.

The duct tape at school was not the best idea! Standing up for Jesus is a great idea! He should not have been kicked out of school for it! Too many times GOD is ousted from every thing anymore! We want America back, it was founded solely on the principles of GOD!!!

Rather than making religious statements, how about where the Bible warns to avoid the yeast of the pharisees and saducees? Rather than outward appearance, God wants a change in the inner man, not showboating, live as Christ and others will see it by your life not by tape on your mouth...

Freedom of speech on your own ground not disrupting a classroom. Your rights are to learn not to DISRUPT on school property. What about others rights! Put the egos at home and stop whinning about your rights!
