FIRST ON WITN: Guilty Plea In Pit Bull Toes Eating Case

Jacksonville, NC - The parents of a baby whose toes were chewed off by a puppy were given prison time after pleading guilty in an Onslow County court Thursday.

Robbie Jenkins, and her boyfriend, Tremayne Spillman, both admitted to felony negligent child abuse inflicting serious injury and a misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Spillman also plead to felony larceny.

The couple told lawmen they were watching a friend's 12-week-old pit bull puppy, and while they slept, the dog chewed the toes off the four-month-old baby. The puppy was put down and the baby was put in foster care after the incident last August.

The judge sentenced Jenkins 45 days on a misdemeanor charge, while given 8 to 10 months on the felony charge. The woman has already served 5 months of that sentence in jail.

Spillman was given 10 to 12 months on the felony count and 45 days on the other charge and 4 to 5 months on the larceny charge. He has already served more than six months in jail.

The judge ordered both to take a parenting classes while in prison.

I quite agree. The breed of dog DOES NOT MATTER!!!It is the OWNER not the DOG!All dogs bite and chew unless trained otherwise. It is instinct.People who don't train or care for their animals properly are the reason for breed retrictions.I have been personally bit 12 times by different dogs. All different breeds. From a Great Dane down to having to have 2 surgeries to fix what a Miniature Pincher (a breed that weighs about 6 pounds)did to my hand.I have met well trained Pitt Bulls, Rottweilers,Dobermans, and many other large breeds that wouldn't hurt a fly.It is lack of responsibility that causes these horrible accidents. If you have a pet of ANY kind it is your job to make sure they are trained and treated well.If these people had been responsible and not left a 4 month old out, alone, and obviously on the same level as the puppy(The floor??)without supervision this would never have happened. They should be in jail for alot longer than their sentence was.For once put blame were it belongs.

The breed is irrelevant. The cute dogs bite too. Lhasa Apso dogs bite. Pomeranians bite. And you'd better believe poodles and Jack Russel terriers bite -- these posh show dogs are far meaner than most people know. Small dogs are very temperamental and vicious if not well trained, but while large dogs are generally friendly and personable unless trained to be vicious, big dogs (except labs, oddly) get a bad rap. The thing to remember is that canines and felines are predators. They are designed (by God or evolution, take your pick) to do damage in a hurry. They make good pets but that does not change their nature. Even a well-trained dog (big or small) can turn, and once they taste blood, that's it, their instincts take over. It's sad but most cases can be prevented. This was such a case. And I wouldn't be so quick to judge or even try to explain the parents' neglect, lest something awful happen to your own kid when you turn your back for a second. You just never know.

The wheels of justice didn't work the right way for that poor toeless baby. I can't believe the judge didn't drop the hammer on the parents. I feel sorry for the baby having parents like that. Drugs had to play some part in the tragedy as you know the baby has got to be screaming while a frakin dog munched the tos off! Judge should be removed.

This is frightening. When they get out of jail they will probably make a new one. Idiots having babies and the tax payers taking care of them. Just take a minute and take a look at the idiots the state is putting in the community. The state raises them, sends them to school provides meals, books, transportation and all necessary items (welfare, meal tickets, health care, apartments, money to spend and they don't have to work) which gives them opportunity to concretrate on education and they enter adulthood an IDIOT. If this type of thing happened to a public business the government would have some else run it.

Is the baby Mute? Didn't it CRY? If so why didn't either hear it. Hard to believe the baby didn't make a sound or parents could be cruel enough to allow this to happen. It was evident that this child was not their top priority.
