Census Bureau figures suggest it'll take nearly a decade longer than previously estimated before whites no longer make up the majority of Americans.
That's because the economic meltdown and stricter immigration policies have slowed the flow of foreigners into the U.S.
Last year, officials estimated that white children would become a minority in 2023 and the overall population would follow in 2042. Now, the point when minority children become the majority is expected in 2031 with the overall population following in 2050.
The new estimate is based on rates for births and deaths and a scenario in which immigration continues its more recent, slower pace of 1 million new foreigners each year.
