Dental Assistant Charged With Forging Prescriptions

A dental assistant has been charged with forging prescriptions for powerful painkillers.

The SBI said the New Bern Police Department arrested Tania Torres Thursday, and charged her with eight counts of obtaining a controlled substance by forgery in Craven County.

The SBI says Torres forged prescriptions for Hydrocodone and Oxycodone for unlawful sale. Torres was placed in the Craven County Jail under an $80,000 secured bond.

To curious. All assistants (if dentist is smart) have college education to be assistants. That is a credential. We do not clean teeth. That IS the hygienist job. BUT the dentist CAN NOT DO THEIR JOBS WITHOUT A DENTAL ASSISTANT PERIOD!!! THEY ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO THE OFFICE. No matter how much they are paid.

Wondering why this has not been reported in the great New Bern Sun Journal, and I'd love to know which dentist she worked for. As for knowledge and credentialing and pay, I will have my teeth taken care of by a Registered Hygienist who has been to college for this and who is Registered with the NC State Board of Dental Examiners. Perhaps an assistant is taught on the job to do some of these procedures, but for me that is not equivalent to a college educated and state board registered hygienist. To each his own though. What is that saying, they won't buy the cow if they can get the milk for free. If the dentist can pay an assistant significantly less to do as much work as they can get by with them doing, I'm sure many of them choose that route. All offices are the same. Notice the credentials of what appear to be nurses. They could very well be the front desk receptionist. They all look alike in scrubs. Read their nametag and look for credentials!

if a dental assistant can do as much as a hygienist, why would a hygienist get more education. One because they can do more, and Two, they get paid more.

A dental assistant can do as much as a dental hygienist other than SCALE teeth!! Before you say something, DO YOUR RESEARCH!! We are just not registered but we can be CERTIFIED!!!

A dental assistant is much different than a Registered Dental Hygienist. Not saying they don't all have the potential to do this, just saying a dental assistant doesn't have so much education and certification on the line to lose. Think of it as comparing a nurses aide to a Registered Nurse.

To Ashame. She probably was going to sell them herself. She will get another job one day. Probably in another dental office. They will never know! They don't look. Dental Assistants are a dime a dozen is their mentality. About what their pay is too! A DIME! No wonder she is selling drugs on the side! LOL!!!

What was she thinking. She just threw away her schooling, job, life on drugs. SO SAD. She would have been better off buying them from drug dealers off the street.

Dentists are known for having a revolving door out back for dental assistants. They turn them over so much most don't KNOW who they have hired. It is the most undervalued position on the dental staff. Im surprised this does not happen more often. Research a potential assistant, pay a good one well and get rid of your revolving doors for dental assistants. You can not run your practice without them. Its called doing your homework and appreciation for the 'GOOD' ones. Shame on him!
