NC Changes Welfare Requirements

North Carolina's Work First welfare program will begin requiring adults to work before they receive monthly benefit checks.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Friday that starting this month, all adults in the program will be required to provide proof that they're working, going to school or job hunting before they receive a check. Previously, recipients in many counties got checks whether or not they met requirements.

The Department of Health and Human Services Web site states that nearly 11,000 adults in the state participate in Work First.

Officials say recipients will still receive money if they can demonstrate that child care or illness prevented them meeting obligations.

The changes were made after the federal government threatened to slash funding if the state didn't make improvements.

I recieve foodstamps as I am one of the million people who was laid off! There are people like me who still shop like I did before! Triple coupons and doudle coupons whenever I can! I also only buy expensive things when they are really on sale ( crab legs 1.99) which in turn would be no different than me buying chicken! I shop carefully and there is always money left on my card every month! I am trying not to abuse the system! I just think people need to provide a shopping list at least once a month to keep recieving the benefits! I would gladly show them mine! I quit smoking cause I couldnt afford and god only knows when I had my last alcoholic beverage! It just sucks that this system was built for people like me that need it until they get on their feet! I only plan to use this for 6 months or until I can get things under control! Just glad this is one thing I dont have to worry about every month!

To anonymous at 03:37 I realize that the military cannot even help themselves so how are they really helping us. Some people in the military really don't need a check they need to be discharged.

do you realize what the military risk for ungrateful people? If it wasn't for the military you have the freedom to complain about them. welfare is way out of hand and has to be controlled better. people have chosen to live off the government through this program simply because of lack of self respect. people would rather lay around or socialize than to excercise the mental capacity God has granted them. this was NOT meant as a pay check. if something isn't done this program will not be available for future use.

What is really going to end up happening here is.... a lot of people at Social Services are going to get laid off! There was already a Work First program. Now they're advertising it like it's a new idea? How about this.. 54% of our tax money goes to the military. That is $965,000,000,000.000 (BILLION) < ..And 30% goes to Human Resources which includes, Social Services, Social Security, Education, Food and Nutrition Programs, Housing, Labor, etc. ...11% General Government ...5% Physical Resources = 100% So if you are that concerned about your taxes, complain about military... but then that wouldn't be American!

we are raising 5th generation welfare recipients its our own fault.Welfare wasn't meant to be a paycheck or be depended on by whole families to raise their children on.Welfare was meant to be used in rough economic situations for families that lacked income with a limited means for a "period of time" not a lifetime as used by some. Now their new thing is to claim a child is disabled so they can also recieve a check from the gov for that as well.I am tired of seeing the same "trend" we do need to implement changes for those that abuse the system.

75% on welfare are freeloading scum and are frauds. The system is broken and that is why america is broke. You can't continue to pay people's way through life. If what I said offended you then you are probably in the 75% I spoke of. Get a job, get a life and have some pride!!!!

To: Anonymous @7:31. Started a business in 1985 and have had only 4 different assistants since inception. The last 3 were family or friends but the first was not, a complete stranger. We interviewed approximately 10 applicants for our first. Out of the 10 that applied only one was black. Guess who we hired, the black one, why? she was the most qualifed and had a great personality. So, YOU need to quit whinning & making childish statements. Remember your attitude determines your altitude. Attitude & appearance can disqualify someone as soon as they walk into job interview. One last thing, I have a right to "whine" about taxpayer money as I am a taxpayer & I along with my HUSBAND, PAY tax, every year and THAT entitles me the RIGHT to complain as I am paying into the SYSTEM.

To: PLEASE STOP!!!!, what happened to your sister was WRONG but last two sentences of your post just negated everything else you wrote as it was racially tinged. I sincerely hope and pray that your sister can fine a job quickly as a job loss is tough when only one spouse is working. Tell her to keep her chin up and stay strong.
