Rocky Mount On "Most Impoverished City" List

Forbes Magazine has put Rocky Mount and nine other cities on its "Most Impoverished Cities in America" list. Forbes says it used new data from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2008 American Community Survey to form it's list. The magazine looked at poverty, per income capita for the region, the percentage of people receiving food stamps, the percentage of people under age 65 receiving public health care, and the unemployment rate.

The unemployment rate in the Rocky Mount metro area has jumped considerably since the Census Bureau report in 2008. The North Carolina Employment Security Commission reports the Rocky Mount metropolitan area has a 13.8% unemployment rate as of September 2009.

I remember going to a subdivision off of W. Thomas Street & went inside a house with my friend. My goodness I did not people lived like that. "Poverty" who ever is responsible for that district, let the citizens know about Salvation Army, N.E.E.D., Department of Social Services, any help that is available to them!! About the crime rate: Can't say anything about RMPD until Edgecombe County Sheriff Dept. find the serial killer!

Just think once the city leaders sink that money in our new downtown, everything will turn around. I think not. Just get out while u can, accept the fact that will take a beating on your house but your family's safety is more important than money. Run get out NOW!!!!

SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!!! Now the entire world knows what a stinking sewer this town is. We can ALL thank David, Andre, and the rest of the coucil running this town (into the ground)for this mess. BTW, the servers ARE rude at pretty much ALL the restaurants, and all the ratail outlets seem to make a point of hiring the most surrly people they can find, from the management down. But as long as we have a self serving city council, and all the other obvious corruption in this town, it will continue to get worse. Even Durham residents shudder at the mention of Rocky Mount. They used to be the crime capital, now we are. Kudos to us, WO-HOO!

At least RM can excel at something. We now have two big feathers for our cap; the crime rate and the poverty level. I'm all for trying to see things positively but there comes a time when you have to see things realistically and that time is now for Rocky Mount. RM is too far gone to ever be of value to any entity, human or commercial. There are lots of decent people, of all creeds and colors, in RM but the ratio of good to bad is changing very rapidly. Thank God I don't live in the city limits. Best of luck RM. It's been nice knowin'ya.

I agree with most of these comments even though I don't like everthing some said. Not that it matters, but I a black male working hard to raise a family in this city & even I won't even stop at some stores in certain areas. My mother was laid off yrs ago by a textile company that moved it's operation to mexico. The work is so slow at my job that I'm considering joining the army just to get by. For the most part I can understand how forbes came to the conclusion that this city is one of the most impoverished in the country. For the betterment of myself and to give my kids a fighting chance to succeed in life, my wife and I have decided that we have to get out of rocky mount to do that. Besides my family I'm not in an active role trying to make it better in this city, so I'm not going to point blame for the problems the rmt has at anyone. I do know there r not alot of jobs here 4 just a high school grad unless they like fast food or want to work in 1 of the few plants we have.

Rocky Mount has been dangerous and falling apart for over 20 years. The current leadership is just the newest generation to further the decay.

Lack of Leadership, Leaders who play race on every level, Leaders who are only in it for themselves. Welcome to Rocky Mount.

You're not going to be able to change that anytime soon. It's what happens when 70% of tax dollars go to social services.
