Two of six brothers accused of engaging in a horrific sexual abuse case in our state are expected to be formally charged Thursday.
Investigators say the Jackson brothers took part in the abuse of a young girl in their home for nearly 10 years.
All six brothers and their parents have been charged in the Perquimans County case.
According to our affiliate WAVY, 19-year-old twins Aaron and Benjamin Jackson were initially charged incorrectly, but now the correct charges have been made.
The two brothers are expected to be formally charged by a grand jury Thursday.
We will let you know what happens in this disturbing case.
The Jackson brothers were shackled and wearing striped jail jumpsuits as they went into court in Hertford on Monday.
Perquimans County Sheriff Eric Tilley said the brothers, who range in age from 18 to 27, are charged with crimes related to raping a four-year-old girl until she was almost 15.
The parents of the brothers are charged with child neglect in the case. Our affiliate WAVY-TV reports that the parents attended the arraignment and that the mother was smiling. One of the accused spoke to reporters on his way to the hearing.
"I know that you all know that at this time we cannot say anything," said Eric Jackson. "There may be a point in the future where we can, but at this point until all this legal stuff is done there's nothing we can say."
The six brothers remain behind bars, while the parents attended the arraignment and then left. All eight requested court-appointed attorneys.
Perquimans County Sheriff Eric Tilley said the brothers were arrested last Tuesday and charged with crimes related to raping a 4-year-old girl until she was almost 15.
Tilley said the six Jackson brothers, Eric, Jon, Matthew, Nathaniel, Benjamin and Aaron, lived with their parents, John and Nita, who were also arrested Tuesday, each charged with felony child neglect.
Tilley said the investigation began in December 2012 when one of the brothers spoke with his pastor about the abuse and then confessed to the Perquimans County Sheriff's Office. Then another brother confessed.
