Security Ready For New Season At ECU

A clash with fans and local police at an East Carolina home football game last year has resulted in changes on how authorities secure the field and fans.

Fans rushed the field after ECU beat West Virginia last year. Some officers were seen hitting and even body slamming fans. A year later, changes to security have been made.

Major Frank Knight with ECU says they are being proactive to prevent incidents like that from happening again. Knight says ECU and other local officers will work the games as much as possible, instead of out of town officers who may not be as familiar with what to do. One exception is the Wilson Police Department. But Knight says ECU officers will be teamed up with them.

Knight says on Tuesday, the ECU Police met with the new staff of officers and Highway Patrol Troopers to map out how to handle security.

Knight says fans are also reminded it is against Conference USA rules to rush the field.
