A Call From Class Will Cost Teacher $22,000

The attorney for a New Jersey teacher says she won't appeal a $22,000 fine for making a personal call during class. The attorney says the Asbury Park High School teacher admits she made a mistake.

The 120-day salary forfeiture is based on calendar days and will be deducted from a base salary of about $70,000. That's less than a previous estimate of nearly $50,000.

Court records show the veteran performing arts teacher was covering for another teacher in 2008 when she made the cell-phone call. A student recorded two other students dancing while the teacher was on the phone and posted it on YouTube.

The district bans teachers from making personal calls while performing assigned duties.

How about not paying her for that day!!! C'mon, docked 22,000 on her (i'm assuming) first offense..and she was covering for another teacher; not even her normal class. Most substitute/fill in teachers get crap from students anyway.

I think teachers should get combat pay for all the nonsense they have to put up with. Furthermore, I favor reinstituting corporal punishment once again. Let's have the teachers running the schools again. This fine is beyond stupid.

To Sick of Hearing It. Teach for one month, and by this I mean actually teach, not just sit behind a desk and draw a paycheck, Teach. After that month, I'd like to hear what you have to say about salary. Your ignorance is very apparent.

Ok, sick of hearing it. I have taught almost 15 years and make around $40,000. If I get paid in the summer its because I personally put money aside in a savings account just so I don't sit around broke for several months. When I'm in the classroom I am not only teacing my subject but am often playing the roles of advisor, mother, etc to kids who are often desperate for someone to be in their corner. When not actually teaching them I attend meetings, read up on new methods and information in my subject, donate my own time to help with projects, clubs, and other things to help these kids have a better life. And while doing all of this I am held accountable for an EOC test that judges me by how well the students do on this one test without considering whether or not the students tried their best, have something emotionally affecting them (like the student taking the test on the anniversary of his brother's suicide) and such. You go teach for a semester and then you can give an opinion

sounds to me like someone had a grudge and wanted to make her an example......perhaps a student's parent?

Sounds like "sick of hearing it" is jealous. Here's a solution, why don't you go back to school, earn your certification and move to a "Yankee state?" $70,000 is not obscene for a teacher in NJ, NY, PA, MD or VA, in fact, after 12-15 years it's close to the average. This article mentioned that she was a veteran teacher, as well. As a teacher in MD, this year I will be nudging $56K, with now 7 years under my belt. You are correct about the summer vacations... there's nothing quite like getting a paycheck in the middle of July for doing nothing but driving around in my Boxter, partying in Ocean City or sailing. Best of luck to you, and your extremely bitter attitude. Life is too short to be so miserable. Do something to better your life, rather than complain on some message board about people you don't know, or jobs you don't understand.
