Police in Colorado have confiscated 53 baby birds from the bedroom of 15-year-old boy.
They say the teen had apparently taken the birds from neighborhood nests. They think he had them for at least 24 hours.
His mother called animal control after she realized he had them.
Police in Longmont say the 15-year-old and some other neighborhood kids had been trying to feed the birds, but hadn't had much success.
Forty of the birds died. The other 13 are recuperating at a wildlife rehabilitation center.
Rehabilitators say the tiny birds need to be fed every 45 minutes, and must be kept warm so that their digestive systems don't shut down.
Police say the boy had no explanation for raiding the nests. He's been ticketed for cruelty to animals and interference with wild birds.
