Day Care Center's License Suspended After ALE Raid

Teachey, NC - A day care facility, raided this past weekend on moonshine and illegal liquor sales, has had its license suspended by the state.

The state Division of Child Development issued a summary suspension of Wilson Family Day Care's state license Tuesday.

On Saturday Alcohol Law Enforcement Agents, along with Duplin County deputies raided the day care center in Teachey. They say Johnnie & Judy Wilson were operating a "joint", an unlicensed location selling liquor and beer.

Also found were numerous guns, including a sawed-off shotgun.

In its findings, the state says conditions at the center "represent immediate danger to the health, safety, and welfare of children enrolled."

While ALE agents seized the day care license in the raid, the state says the facility must close at the end of the business day when the notice if delivered.

A Duplin County day care center is shut down after authorities say they found the owners selling beer & liquor without an ABC permit. Also found in the raid was a sawed-off shotgun and two gallons of moonshine.

The raid happened Saturday night at Wilson Family Day Care in Teachey.

Alcohol Law Enforcement agents and sheriff deputies say they discovered liquor, beer, moonshine, and numerous weapons at the home.

"It definitely shouldn't be around a day care facility and the majority through my course of experience in law enforcement, most of the people that frequent what we refer as joints, which are illegal alcohol establishments, possess and use narcotics and firearms," says ALE agent Kenny Simma.

Johnnie Wilson is charged with possession/sell of non tax paid alcoholic beverages, possession/sell of alcoholic beverages with no permit, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and felony possession of a weapon of mass destruction (sawed-off shotgun).

Wilson's wife, Judy, is charged with possession/sell of non tax paid alcoholic beverages, possession/sell of alcoholic beverages with no permit.

ALE agents seized the day care center's state license.

When WITN went to the home Monday afternoon, Johnnie Wilson's father was there. "Far as I know, far as I see, they take care of 'em like they were they own kids," says William Wilson. "In the evening the school bus runs and about 5 or 6 gets off the school bus and waits here till they parents come pick em up."

The North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services licenses day care centers. An HHS spokesman says the Division of Child Development is just starting their investigation into what happened this weekend.

The state says the day care got its first license in 1992 and currently can keep 8 children at a time. It is licensed in Judy Wilson's name.

The center was last inspected last July and inspectors found several violations. The most serious appear to be "hazardous cleaning supplies and other items that might be poisonous were not kept out of reach or in locked storage when children were in care." The state says all violations were corrected.
