Close, But No Miley

North Carolina has lost out on being the location
for a new movie starring Miley Cyrus.

The governor's office in Georgia says Cyrus' Disney movie "The Last Song" will be filmed in Savannah this summer.

Cyrus, star of the "Hannah Montana" television series and films, will be playing another character this time.

Best-selling novelist and New Bern native Nicholas Sparks wrote the movie, "The Last Song," that Cyrus will star in.

Gov. Beverly Perdue scheduled a news conference last Wednesday at EUE/Screen Gems studios in Wilmington to announce a project her office said was "expected to create hundreds of jobs." But the event was cancelled.

I feel like I should explain a little further to be clear. Let's say I'm choosing an actress to play a part in my movie. If I choose an actress for her talent as it relates to my character, that's art. If I choose an actress because she shamelessly panders to a huge mainstream fanbase who will come see my movie just because she's in it, therefore making me loads of money...that's when it ceases to be art and becomes commercialism.

J: I'd like to correct your comment; what you meant to say is, "N Sparks does an AMAZING JOB at his books in my opinion." You and many others have the opinion that his books are great. And that's fine, if you like them, then great. To each his own. But the fact is a character in one of his works will be portrayed by Miley Cyrus. A huge commercial hurricane. Obviously, the people behind this project is in it for the money. Commercialism at it's finest. Some, like you, may not have a problem with that and that's fine too. But once crass commercialism comes into the picture, it ceases to be art.

N Sparks does an AMAZING JOB at his books. Its sad to see how people are so ignorant about things like an author who they know nothing about. C'mon people. Its not the end of the world and you should be proud that someone that intelligent came from NC. IF you are from here. Give it a rest.

Nathan that is a good point, but I'd only agree with you if Nicholas Sparks were a self-respecting artist. Clearly he is not if Miley Cyrus is starring in his movie. Even though I have no respect for a man who creates "art" for the commercial value of it, I do congratulate him for cashing in big time. He and his family will live comfortably for the rest of their lives.

The point is that author Nicholas Sparks is an NC native whose novels take place here in Eastern NC and this film is either trying to pass Georgia off as NC or they're arbitrarily changing the setting of the film. And while I have no desire to read any of Mr. Sparks' books or see the movies based on them (not my thing) it does bother me on principle when they change something like this. Can anywhere be made to look like here? That is the real issue.
