Could Your Favorite Sports Team Be Hazardous To Your Health?

The NCAA basketball tournament is in full effect, which means the stakes are high for die-hard fans! But can watching your team lose literally break your heart? According to a new study, yes!

Previous European studies have suggested a link between sports losses and increased death, but until now, no such studies had been done in the US.

Researchers in Los Angeles wanted to see if there were changes in the city's death rate in 1980 when the LA Rams lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the super bowl, and again in 1984 when the LA Raiders won the super bowl.

They found deaths in Los Angeles rose significantly after the Rams' close loss compared to the same period in past years. Also, the city's deaths declined after the raiders' 1984 win!

So how can you survive if your team makes it next year? If you have a history of heart problems, taking beta blockers or anti-anxiety medications before the game may work, or you can even just learn how to use deep breathing!

I may pass out due to boredom from such an event as reading the inane comments posted below.

I believe this. Especially since there is so much drama surrounding sports these days. I have been a Heels fan for many years and I just recently stripped all UNC items from my car because people approached me in stores while I was with my two YOUNG children downing my character for showing support of my Heels team. People who did not know one thing about me used profane language to downsize me in front of my kids. I think this society is sad!! I will not be watching the NCAA! I hope that all the folks that are pulling for teams because of their records get their hearts broken! Spectators no longer pull for teams for their skill of the game anymore, they look more towards wins and losses. People need to step back and realize just what is important in life and need to quit taking sports so seriously!!

I imagine that this could be the case if your pet died as well. It all depends on how someone deals with his/her emotions. If you fail to realize that life continues, then you just might die from such an event. I can't believe someone decided to research this. "To each his own."
