NFL player Marquis Cooper's wife is seeking a presumptive death certificate a week after the Coast Guard called off its search for the missing boater and two friends.

Rebekah Cooper filed a petition for the certificate Wednesday in civil court in Florida.

The Oakland Raiders linebacker departed from Clearwater Pass west of Tampa Feb. 28 in a 21-foot boat. He was with free-agent NFL defensive lineman Corey Smith and two former University of South Florida football players. Smith was a former standout for the Wolfpack.

Their boat overturned after encountering rough waters in the Gulf of Mexico.

Nick Schuyler was found clinging to the boat two days later. The other men have not been found.

With the presumptive death certificate, Cooper's beneficiaries can collect life insurance and other benefits.

Any insurance or inhieritance is not worth the lost of someone you truly love.Just tell me how long does she wait? What is the correct waiting period for this lady. Life after losing someone special is a stuggle everyday. I'm glad my wife is home beside me because I would not trade places with her for any amount.

Anonymous - you certainly have a great deal to add to every story. Unfortunately, you are always negative, did you not get hugged enough as a child? Her husband is lost at sea, they have bills and her life must continue. Or would you rather her default on the loans/house and live off the system. It is a sad day but if you have ever lost someone you know that the only way that you survive is to move on! Never forget but continue to live!

I"m sure she would be thrilled for him to show up alive tomorrow. The fact is, the rescuers presume him to be dead. Getting the certificate does not killl him if he isn't, or prevent him from coming back. As it is, she may not even be able to access these savings everyon eis so certain she must have. And getting the certificate IS part of the healing process. People who think this is too soon have seen too many movies on TV. What's the harm in it, anyway?

This is the deal! She needs the dollars, she wants the dollars, so that means she has got to have the dollars. To Lynne, Spring Training is a baseball thing. For football, it's Spring Practice, Spring Workouts, and Spring Drills as well, but not Spring Training. To moon, if I would have to guess, you are a fan of a Pac-10 team, have at one time before lived out west. I hope she dows get what she deserves and not anything like these CEO's get every month.

To Lynne- It called the affects of Hypothermia. It will do strange things to a person mind. I understand your thinking but dig a little deeper into this story and you'll find what the water Temp actually was and how long it takes for a person to start suffering the affects of Hypothermia. As for her cashing in so early, None of us know the circumstances of their financial affairs. Sure he may make Millions but it may be tied up where she cannot get to them. Give her a break would you.
