It seems police will once again get their blue plate special in North Carolina.
The state says it's giving up on the red-letter license plates, and will soon go back to the traditional blue.
The DMV says the return to blue plates came after requests from customers and police who found the blue plates easier to read from a distance.
The red letters began showing up two years ago and were brought in to assist with the recall of old and worn plates.
The DMV says the remaining 1.1 million red-letter plates are expected to be distributed between now and mid-October.
The state says the change back to blue will be done without incurring any additional cost.
The DMV tells WITN News that once blue plates are issued, those with the red plates can exchange them for blue ones when their vehicle registration is renewed at no cost.
