03/03/09: It's Square Root Day

Dust off the slide rules and recharge the calculators. Tuesday, 3/3/09, is Square Root Day.

For the mathematically challenged, three is the square root of nine.

The holiday for math buffs occurs only nine times each century.

A teacher in Redwood City, California, has started a contest to get people excited about the event. The winner gets -- you guessed it -- $339 for having the biggest Square Root Day event.

The last such day was five years ago, Feb. 2, 2004. The next one is seven years away, on April 4, 2016.

And the next one after that? You do the math.

Thank You Keith... I meant to put May... I actually finished to 10/10/100 like you did. After the first to dates.. you didn't need Pi... 4/4/16, 5/5/25, 6/6/36, 7/7/49, 8/8/64 and 9/9/81. ... but 2^11 is 2048. And 2 November 2048, in some parts of the world, is written 2/11/2048. .... So....the next Power Day comes on February 11 or 2 November, 2048, because 2^11=2048. That’s followed by March 7 or 3 July, 2187; and July 4 or 7 April, 2401. ....But it is in good fun....

Actually that would be May 5, 2025 (5/5/25). March is the 3rd month. In the century starting with 2100, there will actually be 10 "Square Root Days" if you count the full year - 10/10/100. It might be cheating a little, but it's all in good fun, right?
