Mayor Resigns After White House Watermelon E-Mail

The mayor of a California town is resigning after he was criticized for an e-mail with a controversial picture.

But he plans to remain on the City Council.

Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose sent an e-mail, which contained an image of the White House lawn planted with watermelons. It had the title 'no Easter egg hunt this year.'

Grose says he sent the picture to a group of friends, including an African-American businesswoman who called for a public apology.

Grose says he accepts that the e-mail was in poor taste and has affected his ability to lead the city. Grose said he didn't mean to offend anyone and claimed he was unaware of the racial stereotype linking black people with eating watermelons.

Seems if your a politician its best to lose your sense of humor. I had a black friend who always asked me to bring her a watermelon every year off my farm. About the 3rd year I told her I was starting to believe the stereotype. We both had a good laugh and she made fun of my dancing too.Take a look in the mirror and get real there are cultural and racial stereotypes that fit a lot of us white and black. The intent of the sender can be innocent or hateful. If Jessie Jackson called me a redneck I would be very offended but my black friend that asked me for a watermelon could do the same and it would only make me laugh. have a good day

Well D*mn.. I didn't get offended by the email.. but I have NEVER seen so many white people whining. LOL.. the email wasn't even directed toward your race and your up here doing all the crying. ...If I was the Good Lord..I would truly make thing equal... I would make all you white people that have commented negatively about black people... wake up tomorrow AFRICAN AMERICAN. ...Since we have it so good, and pick on every one, and don't work, and love to have babies. For the rest of your life you can sit around and live the good life! ...How many of you wish you would wake up tomorrow.. black? .. Yea, that's what I thought! "Blah Blah... black people get everything... I want to be black". ..Haven't heard that one you bunch of self righteous, know-it-all, hypocrites!

Why is it that only whites are targeted as racist. During the celebrations of Obama's swearing in. Jay-Z was preforming at the request of Obama and spewed racial slurs towards whites and very little was said and nothing done. If a white person had said what this so called artist had said but toward blacks, DC would still be smoldering from the riots. Racism is racism. Like the threats made and the words toward the Duke players during trail. Yet there was no outcry for these people to be thrown out of positions which they hold. Lets get rid of this double standard and start holding all responsible for there actions. Personally i was offended by news coverage during the campaign showing blacks who had never voted in their life but registered since a black man was running. I'm talking about people 60 years old.Talk about racist. It does not get more racist than that.

The Unwise one, you are being a hypocrite again. Leave Alicia alone and dry up. Nobody stops you from making dumb comments, leave her alone when she posts one that actually makes sense. You get all worked up over simple matters.

Stuipd, who cares about this? It would be very smart to use the lawn of white house to grow food, that would mean a president actually cared to feed people, not steal thier money. Do they care?? NOPE. Oh well, maybe someday the big fancy house can do some good somewhere.

To tc greenville Where did it say anything about blacks? What if it had been potatoes on the White House lawn? Should the folks in Idaho be offended? You want to talk racist, how about miss black america or black man magazine? If I started a Miss White America or White Man magazine ,alfred e sharpton would be whining at my door , which by the way is all he is good for .

Alicia of Native American descent, what is your opinion on the whole "Native American as mascots" deal? To be honest, you people just feed into stuff like this with all of your comments. View the story if you're interested; write a comment if you want to; and don't continue to add futile comments. You all get too worked up on simple matters.

I have only one observation from all the racist stories, there are more blacks that don't like whites than whites that don't like blacks. I think the black race are now the racist.
