Pay By The Mile

A special commission on transportation created by Congress is suggesting hiking gasoline taxes and charging motorists by the miles to help pay for road projects.

Neither approach appears to have the support of the Obama

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has said raising the gas tax during a recession is a bad idea. And when LaHood suggested last
week that a mileage tax might merit consideration, the White House
responded within hours, saying, "It is not and will not be the policy of the Obama administration."

But in a report released Thursday, the National Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing Commission says current gas and diesel taxes are not raising enough money to keep pace with the cost of highway, bridge and transit projects.

It proposes a 10 cent increase in the gas tax and 15 cents for diesel and adjusting both for inflation. Otherwise, it says, the nation will face "grim consequences."

NC needs to cut pork. Stop raising and searching for new ways to tax and budget better. Some of our state leaders need to look west (Tennessee) and model this state after TN. No state income tax either.

They need to put toll booths on 95 and that will bring in some serious money flat fee of $ 20.00 at SC and VA borders. I am against the taxes and the toll booths but if I had to choose toll booth any day over taxes. Or they could do like VA charge $1,500.00 fine for speeding. It would really bring ins some serious money . Especially around Raleigh and Wilmington! Higher fines for DWI and Speeding is better! All in all we need to fire all of the politicians and start over and begin a new Government with honest hard working and incorruptible people!

Sam, I don't agree that any taxes should be increased with the economy being the way it is right now. None, nada. Next, they will want to tax air, oopps they want to do that too. Water, yep, food, yes, they do that too, get it? We pay taxes on everything. Remember the Boston Tea Party hisory? Tax fast food? No, stop taxing everything we buy or come up with a straight accross the board tax. Don't forget, NC also wants to raise the one of the already highest gas taxes in the country for mileage tax. Then if the feds add to that....stop taxing us, the poor, middleclass. This is just another way of taxing the working class of people.

Stop hiking gas taxes, they are already way too high as it is, but charging motorists based on the amount of miles they put on I will agree with that, because it is fair to do that. The more you use the roads, the more you should put back into it. Obama needs to put restrictions on how much crooked money these politicians are bringing in as well as the executives.
