Former Prison Guard Says She's Not Carrying Inmate's Baby

Windsor, NC - Tameka Mebane admits she had an on-the-job relationship, but she says a prison inmate is not the father of her child.

Mebane, who used to work as a correctional officer at the Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, is facing criminal charges for having sex with an inmate.

The Windsor woman talked to WITN's Michael Baldwin today. "I didn't confess to anything, he is assuming. That was a the rumor that was out..the rumor was I was pregnant before I knew I was pregnant. (Reporter) So this is an assumption by the police? (Mebane) True."

But Windsor police say Mebane admitted the inmate was the father during a police interview. "The question was asked was there a relationship and she said yes. Then the question was asked is her soon to be son to be born is that the inmates? And she said yes," says Sgt. Ricky Morris.

Mabane admits she had a relationship with an inmate, but disputes the police department report, which says in part, the evidence "consisted of several letters from and to the inmate in question."

The police report also alleges authorities found a cell phone on the inmate and Mebane's number was on that phone.

Police also say pictures were mailed to an inmate of a black woman with only underwear on. The woman appeared to be about four months pregnant. "No facial features were ever seen in the photos, but there were some details of the body that we feel it was her," says Morris.

Mabane says her relationship with the inmate lasted for two months and admits there may have been an encounter once which she says was wrong. But then WITN asked a simple question: (Reporter) "Who is the father? (Mebane) God. Reporter) "So you dont want to say who the father is? (Mebane) No."

Former Guard Charged

A former correctional officer has been arrested for having sex with an inmate and police say she's pregnant with the inmate's baby.

Tameka Mebane was charged last Wednesday with sexual offense in an institution. At the time Mebane was a guard at the Bertie Correctional Institution. She resigned February 2nd.

Windsor police Sgt. Ricky Morris says the woman is four months pregnant with the inmate's child and that the sexual encounters took place between October and the first of this year.

Morris says Mebane is accused of having sex with the inmate in several different places in the prison, including a closet and break room. He said the woman worked nights, when there were less restrictions and supervision of employees.

Mebane was released from jail on an unsecured $5,000 bond. Police say there will be no charges against the inmate.

All COs at BMRJ need to be investigated for giving food items not prepared by the kitchen or provided by canteen funds to inmates. COs have been known to take sodas to inmates and other items as well. A formal investigation is needed. Please post any known deviations from policy here.

Well I guess the Regional jail employees can get away with whatever. I have witnessed the COs committing many voilations during visitation shifts while sitting in the lobby. I will be sure to keep the public abreast of any deviations from policy---especially deviations that "Mr. Policy" violates. Today I witness several cellular phones ringing in the lobby when there is clearly a sign noting that such is not allowed. My sole purpose is to ensure that a thorough investigation of the COs is conducted especially before Mr. Policy ends his 9th year. His next employer needs to be aware that he has not always followed the rules in his current position. I do not know his name however he has been referred to as the young AA male with the large derrière. Stay tuned for more voilations and if you are aware of any be sure to post here so that a formal investigateion may be launced. FYI I was visiting a young adult to offer motivational thoughts while @ BMRJ.

In response to DADDY WHO?????: You have got to be kidding me!!?? This person jeopardized an entire institution and it's staff by having an affair with an inmate of all people. You use the higher power as a excuse and a scapegoat for her incompetence!! You are just as silly as she is for making that statement about God's Plan. All of the people who worked there when I was there, She chose to conceive a child with someone who can not provide for that child. On top of that, he is incarcerated!!!! I guess you, like others, failed to realize that........From reading your statement, you must be from Bertie or from the surrounding counties.....which doesn't surprise me at all!!!

Why is it that all this talk about the do's and don'ts when then goverment makes it hard on a person with a record to get a C/O job in the D.O.C.So maybe thats why the system is so screwed because the robbers, drug users, bad creditors, traffic violators, and the innocent found guilty by the law just aint good enough to be a C/O an the D.O.C is full of criminals with training. i say the system needs to regroup an check out the ones they giving these jobs to, and stop with the you are not qualified for a job in the DOC bezause you might have been a high school drop out.Wherein this young lady messed up would a person with bad credit have done the same?
