NC Public Universities To Likely See Tuition Hike

Students attending public universities in North Carolina will likely see their tuition increase next year, by as much as $432.

A committee of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors approved several rate hikes Thursday. Among them, an average 3.7 percent increase in tuition and fees.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported the broad series of hikes for next semester will raise tuition and fees by as little as $71 at East Carolina University to as much as $432 at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

But the increases are less than a third of what universities requested. UNC system president Erskine Bowles asked for the lower increases last month amid the struggling economy.

The full Board of Governors is expected to endorse the rate increases Friday.
