The Humane Society honored Congressman Walter Jones Tuesday for his role in allowing the family of a fallen Camp Lejeune Marine to adopt his canine partner Lex.

Corporal Dustin Jerome Lee, a U.S. Marine corps military working dog handler was killed in action on March 21, 2007, in Fallujah, Iraq.

The humane society says "With characteristic persistence and grace, Congressman Jones convinced our military to override its rules and grant 'Lex,' a German shepherd, an early retirement.

In so doing, the Humane Society says Congressman Jones provided much needed comfort to a fallen Marine's family and a loving home to a loyal and deserving dog."
