USA Swimming Suspends Phelps

Michael Phelps has been suspended from competition for three months by USA Swimming, the latest fallout from a photo that showed the Olympic great inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

The sport's national governing body also cut off its financial support to Phelps for the same three-month period, effective Thursday.

"This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero," the federation said in a statement.

"Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust."

Phelps won eight gold medals in Beijing.

To itsinmypants, Slavery is mentioned many times in the bible, & still exists today. The bible is not the easiest book to comprehend & I admit that I don't spend nearly enough time in it. When I have taken the quality time required things have been revealed to me. Personally, I don't have a problem with the legalization of marijuana. However, at the moment it simply is not legal. Michael Phelps is learning a very valuable lesson about being in the public spot light. My reference to Luke in this context seemed very appropriate. Mr. Phelps has an amazing ability, & people do expect him to be above certain behaviors. Kids look up to him as a role model. I am sure he deeply regrets his actions. Thank you for your comment.

Hey hope, My friend said that they talk about putting your daughter into slavery in the book of Leviticus could you enlighten me on that? Also God made weed it is a plant isn't it? I love the Lord as much as the next person and I have never seen anyone OD on weed or like steal money or rob stores for it. I highly agree with Mary's comment.

This just goes to show that you can smoke pot and win gold medals. Who says pot ruins lives? Ha.

"For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required..." Luke 12:48 Michael needs to clean up his act/image. Many have hit the bong/pipe...yet he has placed himself in a public position & will be judged by the people. He had to have known that camera was there. He has learned a lesson the hard way. The media is just doing their job.

Well, I agree that he should get in trouble. If we allow him to get away with it then others will want the same treatment. Sorry does not cut it.

Who said there was pot in the bong, it looks empty to me! Seriously pot grows wild on the side of the road in IOWA, yeah folks right here in the USA. Pot is Gods creation, pills are not, smoke a joint instesd of popping a Valium. Pot is the best for cancer patients going thru kemo, keeps them from being so sick. You don't OD on pot, just the chocolate cookies and potato chips afterwards. Looked again that bong is still empty!!

Michael Phelps is a kid just like everyone else that was a kid he made a mistake. He forgot for a second he was in the lime light for winning gold medals and becoming an American Hero. He still is in my book. There is nothing like rolling a fat dooby and smoking one after a few beers. Rock stars and music stars do it you don't see any fines heading there way (ex. Big Snoop Dogg). If pot was legal we could tax that and I would smoke a J once or twice a weekend. If they let me burn one on the way to my first stop in the beer truck Id do it. Don't get mad because it is way safer than drinking and driving.

My question would be, did he fail a drug test? If not then why is he being punished for something that is only a picture. So if someone takes a picture of me holding a roll up, I am guilty of smoking pot.
