Nearly 30 sheriffs from across the state graduated from the Sheriff's Leadership Institute Friday.

Four sheriffs from eastern carolina received their completion certificates. It took nearly 160 hours worth of mental boot camp for sheriffs. They covered everything from budget, to personnel, and even communicating with news media. Sheriffs we talked to say they'd do it all over again if they could for the knowledge and the connections they made.

"Having worked for the sheriff's office for 30 years, I thought I had a great understanding. I've realized there's a lot more to it than what I was exposed to," said Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks. "

"Extremely helpful in planning for the budget- new laws coming out. They're changing them as fast as they're writing them," said Jones County Sheriff Danny Heath.

This is only the second graduating class from the institute and the only training program of its kind in the country.

Excellent story! Glad to hear about this new program and training. Any effort that strives for the betterment of our LEO's, including the department heads (sheriff's), is a positive investment for our communities and the departments that serve them.

Good job NC Sheriff's. Thanks for bettering your education and keeping up with all the legal updates. Keep fighting to get your departments proper funding for jails, equipment and positions to help combat crime in North Carolina.

It's time for a few new live targets for the thugs & gangstas of ENC. Those tenderfoot rookies don't stand a chance. They better learn to hide or submit, otherwise they'll end up in a box. ...My advice? Get a job out in Montana. Better yet, Alaska!

dont waste our tax dollers on edycashin! hahahaha come on! im glad they got schooled, they needed it. i love how someones going to complain about their law enforcement officers becoming qualified to do their actual job! be thankful for that. the waste of money is when the uneducated person is in the chair of deciding what is done with your tax dollars. or when they say something lame, like "theres no silver bullet" regarding gas prices.

What's with all the complaining about cost? The state wastes money on a lot of things, but actual education for law enforcement (or anyone else for that matter) should not be on your hit list. It should not even be on your radar. I'm a taxpayer, and I see this as money well spent. And you as a taxpayer should complain about obvious wastes of money, *not* activities that have a teeny, itsy-bitsy remote chance of being a waste of money under the right circumstances.

Where is this school located? Shouldn't that be part of the story?

I agree, what were the costs? Some of the local Sheriffs WILL NOT be elected again and think of the waste of money we as taxpayers have spent on good deputies that Sheriffs have let go for no reason. Rember everyone when you see a Sheriffs Association sticker in someones window it for the SHERIFFS to go out and party on while attending meetings. NOT for Deputy sheriffs....

Hope Jordan takes this class....maybe bring his ego down a few notches and educate him on how a sheriff is suppose to run the department.
