A Greenville man is charged after allegedly stealing a detective's badge and wallet from the lobby at a jail, but the man tells WITN it's all a misunderstanding.

Jerry Howard of Greenville has been charged with two counts of financial card theft. According to Howard, an Elizabeth City officer left her badge and wallet on a bench in the Pitt County Detention Center lobby Tuesday afternoon. He says he picked it up to give back to her, but she had already gone inside. He claims he waited for her and only wanted to give it to her, not another official, but then he had to leave. He says after deputies called him he gave the wallet back, but he was still charged.

"I don't understand why I'm being charged for something that I haven't done," Said Howard.

Deputies say surveillance video gives them reason to believe Howard stole the wallet. They say he had the opportunity to give it to a jail official multiple times, but did not.

She left here wallet and badge in the lobby of a jail. He stated he went out to look for her,she was gone, I hate to say this but common sense should have been the next step, "give it to the magistrate." The camera that captured the incident says a lot. I don't know what his intentions were but his decision was not the best one. I know i tell my granddaughter whose eleven, "THINK" it the easiest thing you'll ever have to do with your brain but in the long run, you'll be glad you did. GOOD LUCK!

if the wallet was just left laying around,it probably won't nothing in it anyway. they don't make that much money for someone to try to steal from!

I completely agree Chuck! He could have also just let it sit there. Seems to me that she was testing him or someone by leaving such important items like that when normally those things would remain on her person...her actions along with his are suspect in my opinion.

The guy should have never left the office with this wallet & Badge. He should have given it to someone in charge there & Got a receipt for same. Maybe he had good intentions,But leaving with this stuff looks otherwise.Guess the camera system there got him.

If Mr. Howard had no intention of using what was inside the wallet, he had ample opportunity to turn the wallet over to officials. He was in the Magistrates office. Why not relinquish the wallet to the magistrate? I believe there is a PCDC officer at the records window, 24/7. Additionally, if he wanted to be recognized personally by the officer who lost the wallet, the PCDC records window officer would know immediately how to contact the officer. I am certain she would have been forever grateful to him for returning the wallet. It sounds to me like he had no idea his actions were being recorded and thus, seized the opportunity to take something that did not belong to him. Just my opinion.

I found a purse in one of the carts in the parking lot. I picked it up and took it right into customer service at Walmart. Two males were in the parking lot getting carts and said they would take it in, BUT I had a feeling I should be the one to take it in and did. I sure hope the lady did get it back. It was really a heavy wallet type of purse. Just before Christmas to. No I didn't look inside but the girl at the service desk did and I saw checks, cash & credit cards inside. Sure hope the lady got it back.

Either he took the wallet or he didn't it is as simple as that. NO MISTAKE there. Probably he is in jail for stealing.

I agree Jerry, why were u @ the jail? If you saw it and picked it up to give back, and she was gone, then you should not have left the facility with it. You should have given it to an officer. Did you think you were going to be rewarded? You got more recognition than you bargained for....DUMB MOVE!!!!

My same question, why were u @ the jail, and by u leaving the facility with the wallet, you got more recognition than you bargained for. Did you think you were going to be rewarded if you gave it back in person. That might have been true if she was still there, but since she wasnt, you should have left it, or gave it to an officer....DUMB MOVE!!!!
