The NCDOT announced 4 public meetings this month to answer questions and receive comments about the proposed toll increase for ferry routes. The first public meeting is 2 weeks from Wednesday on January 18th in Swan Quarter. A full listing of the meetings is below.
It's 15-dollars to ferry a typical car one way on the Swan Quarter and Cedar Island ferries to Ocracoke now, but that could be increased. The five-dollar ferry ride for a typical car on the Southport- Fort Fisher ferry could also go up. There could also be new tolls for 2 routes which are currently free, the Bayview/ Aurora and Cherry Branch/ Minnesott Beach Routes.
The new tolls will take affect April 1 as required by law after the General Assembly mandated NCDOT increase ferry revenue to $5 million annually. NCDOT hired a private firm, CDM SMITH, to study the issue.
