Shaw University Reopens To Students After April Tornado

The South's oldest historically black college is reopening to students after its Raleigh campus was crushed by one of the tornadoes that swept across North Carolina in April.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Monday that incoming students are touring Shaw University and sizing up the temporary cafeteria built with help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

A tornado touched down at the center of the downtown Raleigh campus on April 16, damaging 27 buildings, including dormitories and the student center. The damage forced the school to close for the rest of the academic year and prevented more than 20 percent of the graduating class from getting their diplomas.
