A long process of fighting off a sulfur plant in Carteret County now has officials in talks of building a sulfur storage facility.

PCS Phosphate and the Clean County Coalition met about building a dry enclosed solid sulfur storage facility at the port in Morehead City.

In the meeting, PCS Phosphate said they had "misjudged the public reaction" to its earlier plan to build a sulfur re-melting plant at the port.

After the meeting, the company promised a commitment to complete transparency in their intentions for the dry storage facility.

If followed through, the building would be the first in the industry that stores sulfur in open piles.
