TEACHER OF THE WEEK: Vickie Carden, From Chicod School

WITN's very first "Teacher of the Week" for 2012 is Vickie Carden from Chicod School in Pitt County.

Carden was nominated by a parent whose daughter broke her leg and missed weeks of school. When the student did return, the parent says all her teachers were great. But she says Vickie Carden was extraordinary, reassuring both the student and parent that everything was going to be okay and volunteering to assist the student, staying after school to review with the student and get her up to speed.

The student was new at the school, making this time even more difficult.

The parent wrote: "Thanks to Mrs. Carden's dedication and love for her students - my daughter had a very successful year at a brand new school!"

Carden says "I'm a proud graduate of ECU, where I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Elementary Education. This is my 10th year teaching. I taught 4th grade for four years and 2nd grade for a year before moving to my current position as an elementary AIG (academically/intellectually gifted) teacher at Chicod. This will be my second year as the elementary lead AIG teacher for the county, where I work closely with other AIG teachers to implement a rigorous curriculum for Pitt County's gifted students. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband and 4-year-old daughter."

WITN's Teacher of the Week segment is sponsored by the North Carolina Education Lottery. Each teacher will receive a plaque and a $100 gift card to purchase school supplies.

If you would like to make a nomination for "Teacher of the Week," send an e-mail to totw@witn.com. You can see each "Teacher of the Week" Wednesdays on WITN News at Sunrise, about 6:45 a.m.
