TEACHER OF THE WEEK: Melissa Coxe of Pitt County

The Teacher of the Week for Monday, December 23rd 2013 Melissa Coxe from Eastern Elementary in Greenville.

Coxe is the general music and chorus teacher at Eastern Elementary in Greenville and has been teaching for 16 years.

A New York native, Coxe earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1998, a Master of Music degree from East Carolina University in 2001, and is a National Board Certified Teacher. Coxe also teaches Intro to Basic Music Skills at ECU. This is a class designed to teach Elementary Education majors how to integrate music into their daily instruction.

Coxe writes "becoming an Eastern (Elementary) Eagle was a blessing. The staff and administration took me under their wing, and guided me into the teacher I have become today. Now it is my turn to do this for beginning teachers. My favorite thing about going to school every day is the family environment that exists. Each staff member is there with one goal in mind: to help our students become successful contributing members of society."

Coxe's believes in John F Kennedy's quote "a child miseducated is a lost child." She tailors her teaching style to reach each student through music expression, teaching the whole child, and building meaningful relationships with her students. She also teaches her students to stand up for what they believe in, and leads by example as an active member of NCAE.

The two people who nominated Coxe wrote: 'Mrs. Coxe teaches music at Eastern Elementary, as well as a music class for Elementary Education majors at ECU. We, personally, are two of Mrs. Coxe's ECU students. She goes above and beyond her duties for us in this course. She is mainly teaching about how to integrate music in our classrooms, but she pulls many different resources and ideas for us. Mrs. Coxe is a great display of a well-rounded teacher that brings much more than the curriculum to her classroom. When she teaches, she teaches past the standards. Mrs. Coxe teaches students values and characteristics of being a good friend and citizen, while creating a positive atmosphere in her classroom. She makes each and every student feel welcome and encourages them to be themselves. We feel that Mrs. Coxe is very deserving of this award, as she does so many good deeds throughout her school and community looking for no personal recognition!"
