The Teacher of the Week for Wednesday, April 17th is Rae-Ann Daughtry from South Creek High School in Robersonville in Martin County.
Rae-Ann went to school at Tyler School of Art/Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BFA in painting and drawing, a minor in art history, and a teaching certification. In 2011, she studied abroad in Rome, Florence, Paris, Venice, and Pompeii where she both studied and sketched the artwork of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci as well as others.
This is her first year teaching, and she says she feels incredibly blessed to be teaching art at South Creek High School in Martin County schools under a great principal, vice principal, and administration. Her teaching philosophy mirrors that of Henri Matisse - "Creativity takes courage." Rae-Ann wrote: “I try to support and foster that courage in students so they are not afraid of art but rather allow the world of art to open up their imagination and sense of exploration.”
The person who nominated her wrote: “Rae-Ann has motivated her students in many ways by involving them within the school and the community. She has developed an art club… She always goes above and beyond her teaching duties to ensure her students have valuable learning experiences. She has had fund raisers to hopefully go on a field trip to a museum and is such an inspiration to her students. She is constantly seeking ways to find projects that would benefit the students, the school and community. She told me she wants to do everything in her power to share her love of art and be the best teacher she can. I am so thankful to have her within our school system.”
