Study Shows Statewide Recycling Efforts Expanding

A new study says recycling efforts in North Carolina are steadily expanding, adding jobs to the economy and even growing despite the sluggish economy.

The study, released Tuesday by the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources, measures the impact of recycling in North Carolina.

It found that more than 15,000 people across the state are employed in the recycling industry and that recycling is increasing even in industries staggered by the recession and weak recovery.

Even though the construction industry was particularly hurt by the economy, recycling efforts in that segment aren't slowing. The study found that an all-time high of more than 112,000 tons of construction waste was recycled last year.

Department Secretary Dee Freeman says she expects continued growth from the segment in the years ahead.
