CHARLOTTE (AP) - The CEO of Family Dollar is giving $1 million to a fund in Charlotte to help the city help homeless families.
The Charlotte Observer reported that Howard Levine says he hopes the money will encourage others in the community to provide funding for Foundation for the Carolinas.
The foundation is trying to raise $10 million to match $10 million pledged by the city to help shelter and stabilize homeless families.
Brian Collier with the foundation says the group has raised half of the money it needs.
Charlotte officials say homelessness has risen sharply in the last three years, resulting in an overflow at emergency shelters.
