UPDATE: Child's Condition Improves After Parents Killed In Murder-Suicide

Reports say that a little girl shot by her father, who fatally shot her mother and himself, is on the road to recovery.

A 5-year-old girl survived the murder-suicide of her parents Friday in Winton in Hertford County. Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughn told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald that the daughter of Catherine and James McCutcheon underwent successful surgery after getting shot in the stomach, though the sheriff believes she'll have a long road ahead of her from the emotional scars.

The paper also reports Catherine McCutcheon resigned from her job as the director of nursing at Roanoke-Chowan Community College two days before authorities say she was killed.

A five-year-old girl fights for her life after her parents died in what authorities call a murder-suicide.

It happened around 9:45am Friday morning at 104 Whitley Lane in the Hertford County Town of Winton.

Sheriff Juan Vaughan says 40-year-old Catherine McCutcheon and her daughter were moving things from the home with her uncle.

Vaughan says, 56-year-old James McCutcheon, Jr., who lives at an adjacent mobile home went to talk to his wife.

Vaughan says, Catherine was planning to leave her husband and take their daughter with her.

Authorities say that's when James went to his residence and returned with a .38mm revolver and shot his wife in the chest and his daughter in the side, before turning the gun on himself.

Vaughan says Catherine's uncle was in the back of the mobile home when he heard the gunfire, but it was too late.

Once authorities arrived on scene they found Catherine and James dead.

Their daughter was taken to Vidant Roanoke-Chowan hospital where her condition is unknown at this time.

Authorities say this is an isolated domestic situation.
