SCAM ALERT: Gift Card Winnings Turn Into A Monthly Bill

A freebie is always exciting -- especially when it's something you actually want. But if you get an offer for a gift card that via text, be cautious!

The Better Business Bureau is warning people about text messages circulating which say you just won a $1,000 gift card to a big name store.

Once you hit the link and go to what looks like a legitimate website, you are asked to fill out a basic form with your contact information, including your cell phone number. The company then will send you a second text, this one with a secret pin to claim your prize.

In reality, what you have just done is sign up for a premium texting service that costs you $9.99 a month.

This scam is known as "cramming." a company finds a way to charge you through your cell phone carrier.

To make sure you do not fall prey to this scam, remember this: if you get a text like the one described above, forward it to 7726. That will alert your cell service provider to block future messages from that number.
