Riverkeeper, Attorney Meeting With Locals About Proposed Limestone Quarry

Neighbors in Beaufort County are still weighing the pros and cons of a proposed limestone quarry being built in their area.

The proposed build site is near Blounts Creek and Wolbourn Road.

In May, Martin Marietta Materials got the necessary certification from the N.C. Division of Water Quality, but the company is now seeking another permit from the state Division of Water Resources regarding the quarry's water discharge.

Some neighbors said the quarry's demands of water would negatively impact their water tables and wells while the output water from the quarry could damage the Blounts Creek environment.

On Thursday, Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Heather Deck and Geoff Gisler, an attorney with Southern Environmental Law Center, are planning an informational meeting for residents.

Interested neighbors can attend the meeting at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Cotton Patch Landing on Blounts Creek in Chocowinity.

The Department of Water Resources said a decision on the pending permit should be made by mid-October.
