A recent report says that children who live in Onslow and Cumberland Counties, home to sprawling military bases, are twice as likely to be killed by a parent or caregiver.
The report called "Collateral Damage on the Home Front" was done by the group "Action for Children in North Carolina." The report says that 11 children were killed in Onslow County between 2001 and 2010 at the hands of a parent or caregiver.
The report also shows that the rate of homicide by a parent or caregiver in both of these counties decreased over the past decade - down by 11 percent in Cumberland County, and down by 5 and a half percent in Onslow County.
The group calls that "encouraging progress," but calls for more work to be done.
