Work continues to rebuild Greene County Middle School in Snow Hill, after a tornado all but destroyed it in April 2011.
Patrick Miller, Greene County Schools Superintendent, says the substantial completion date for the rebuilt school is May 24, 2013. That is when the school system will receive the certificate of occupancy and begin moving things into the school.
That date happens to fall during the testing that wraps up each school year, so Miller says they will not attempt to move students into the new facility at that time. Rather, they'll use the summer to move furniture and everything else into the rebuilt school. It should be ready for the first day of school in August 2013.
Throughout this school year, Greene County Middle students have been attending class in mobile units. Miller said of the students, "They're doing remarkably well. They're showing a lot of resiliency. The setup is not perfect, but they're making the most of it."
