Rain Could Hinder Work On Pender Co. Fire Lines

Fire officials say 19 homes have been evacuated from a wildfire that has moved from Sampson County into Pender County.

Officials say the evacuations were necessary after the fire broke through containment lines over the weekend. The fire has burned about 700 acres.

In eastern Pender County, a fire in the Holly Shelter Game Lands that started June 19 has burned more than 21,000 acres and is 25 percent contained.

Several area businesses donated meals and supplies to firefighters working over the weekend.

Authorities say scattered showers Monday and Tuesday could help dampen the Pender fires, but may interfere with a planned burn intended to halt the blaze near Holly Ridge before it reaches US Highway 17.
