As PCS Phosphate continues to educate concerned residents about its proposed sulfur melting plans, the company says the cost of its second option for a new facility is $75 million more than planned.
The Washington Daily News reports PCS Phosphate's current proposal to turn the company's property in Aurora into a sulfur-melting facility could cost $170 million. The company's original plans to build the plant at the state port in Morehead City was going to cost $95 million.
The report says PCS Phosphate has sent postcards to 60,000 people in Beaufort and Carteret Counties about the "Beaufort County Sulfur Project."
PCS Phosphate has released new details on its website about its plans to build new facilities in Beaufort and Carteret Counties.
Public protest to the original proposal to build the sulfur melting facility in Morehead City led to PCS Phosphate dropping the proposal. Since then, leaders have shifted their focus to Aurora for a possible building location.
PCS Phosphate says the potential project at the port could include a new ship unloader and conveying systems designed for solid sulfur handling. The project would also feature an enclosed sulfur storage warehouse and a new barge loading system designed for solid sulfur handling.
