Operation Firecracker - Booze It And Lose It

The Jacksonville Police Department will be cracking down on drunk driving this holiday weekend.

Jacksonville police are participating in the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program's Operation Firecracker - Booze It and Lose It. The program requests that law enforcement officers focus on DWI enforcement.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 388 deaths in North Carolina as a result of alcohol-related crashes in 2010. Jacksonville police caution that if you consume alcohol and drive, you face possible arrest, along with fines and court costs up to $10,000 and the possibility of being involved in a crash that takes the life of another.

Jacksonville police warn drivers not to get behind the wheel after you've been drinking.

"If you are planning to drink, plan ahead and appoint a designated driver - or program the phone number of a cab company into your cell phone," Sergeant Mark Ketchum said.

Operation Firecracker begins Friday and ends on Sunday, July 8.
